Where is your home base?
Saratoga, which is in the San Francisco Bay Area
What is your photography genre/specialty?
I do it all! I am widely known for shooting the last 5 Olympic Games, but locally I am known for photographing events like bar mitzvahs and weddings. I also teach photography for wildlife, landscapes and about everything else. I have a passion for all types of photography.
What is your most memorable image and why?
They are all memorable. I have more than 600 photos in my favorite folder, but there really is not one that stands out, since each one of them comes with a memory of why I took it and what I was feeling at that moment.
Why did you become a photographer? What drives you to capture images and has this changed over time?
I love capturing history and telling stories through photos. Each time I am behind the camera, I get to express my artistic side and be creative. There are many times when I am working and amazed that I get paid to do what I love.
Do you have any personal rituals to help you get ready for a shoot? What are they?
Nope—I just get into my zone and kick ass!
What are the top 5 things you can’t live without while on a shoot?
My Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II lens, my iphone, my Canon 600 EX-RT flashes, my Think Tank bags and a Starbuck non-fat mocha.
How do you regain your inspiration if you hit a creative rut?
I challenge myself to go out and shoot something different.
Who or what has been the biggest influence on your journey as a photographer?
I have been blessed to become friends with so many influential photographers who have really helped me along the way. Some of these are Moose Peterson, Joe McNally, Jay Dickman, Greg Gorman and so many others.
If you could share just one tip with aspiring photographers, what would it be?
Have passion for what you do.
What are the top three Zenfolio features essential to helping you run your business?
I use Zenfolio for 2 main reasons: for my website to make me look good, and to post the image galleries for my clients. I especially love the ease of uploading images to a gallery. It is fast and reliable.
If you could second shoot with any photographer (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
Probably Ansel Adams, just to meet him and probe him for his thought process when capturing and processing a photo.
How has the photography world changed since you turned pro?
There are so many people who have purchased equipment and tried to make the jump into this business. They think it is an easy way to make money, and that it is a fun job. It is fun but it is definitely not easy. It takes a lot of practice to get to the top of your craft.
What one piece of software besides Zenfolio do you consider to be vital in your workflow?
Camera Bits Photo Mechanic. I live in this software!
