About Ioan

I am a British Institute of Professional Photographers Award winning photographer and Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society. I have worked with a significant amount of North Wales, Northwest and UK wide businesses and am pleased to have received so many positive testimonials.

My aim is to work closely with my clients, using my marketing experience to help me understand how I can best represent a client’s image. An avid twitter user, would find that I ‘tweet’ throughout my photoshoot, giving my twitter followers an insight which many of my clients see as great added value as well.

I spend time listening to what you would like me to achieve, whether I am doing corporate headshots or PR photography. I always aim to help people relax in front of the camera, which results in you getting the best pictures.

Where is your home base? (city/state)

Originally from Quebec, I now call North Wales home.  I live in a town just outside of Chester; close to the sea and surrounded by the Mountains of Snowdonia, the area is known for its natural beauty.

What is your photography genre/specialty?

I’m recognized for Documentary Wedding Photography; as a photographer who aims to capture character, personality and relationships in natural images. A wedding is a major event in peoples’ lives, capturing how they felt at the moment is inspiring.

What is your most memorable image and why?

This never changes – its a picture of a first dance at a wedding. The way that the groom looks at the bride as they dance in the image is so emotive. I always say that if I had a daughter, I’d want the guy that marries her to look at her in that way.

Why did you become a photographer?

I’d stumbled upon French magazines as a teenager and was inspired by the iconic images of Paris and Parisian life. I was attracted to finding romance in imagery and creating impactful scenes which evoke emotion.

What drives you to capture images and has this changed over time?

Life is a beautiful thing – I want to give people images of moments that remind them of being together at the particular time. I am quite the romantic!

Do you have any personal rituals to help you get ready for a shoot? What are they?

Nope – I just make sure that I have all of my gear together the night before.

What are the top 5 things you can’t live without while on a shoot?

You know, I’m not a materialistic guy. I just rock up with my usual kit and have enough experience to cope if something unexpected happens.

How do you regain your inspiration if you hit a creative rut?

It’s always hard not to become stressed or feel frustrated when this happens. But it does happen – to everyone. For me, I go outside of wedding photography for fresh inspiration. I look at photos with interesting lighting and placement, and watch films of cinematic quality. I
find that watching TV programs like The Hire and Mad Men, which have great imagery gets the creativity following whilst also allowing me to unwind.

Who or what has been the biggest influence on your journey as a photographer?

For overall inspiration, it has to be Willy Ronis – a renowned French photographer. Nu Provencal is still one of my favorite images. For personal influence; Myk Briggs a local photographer gave me the confidence to become a professional; James Ravillious revealed to me the importance of documenting; and Jerry Ghionis and Neil Van Niekerk shared an insight which has helped me through adversity – buy me a beer and I’ll share this with you.

If you could share just one tip with aspiring photographers, what would it be?

Be honest and be yourself. Your work is a reflection of you.

What are the top three Zenfolio features essential to helping you run your business?

Sales and marketing – I’ve sold more prints this last year than I had in the previous 5 years combined thanks to the automated marketing campaigns and I don’t need to spend lots of time shipping or printing either! Zenfolio partners sort everything out for me and my clients!

Integrated blog – This is so easy to use compared to Wordpress and other platforms and having everything in one place has helped to streamline my business. Ease of use and personalization – It’s so easy to make Zenfolio sites truly your own in terms of looks. Plus all the mobile friendly aspects, HTTPS, etc are all handled by Zenfolio so I can focus on the stuff I love doing: capturing moments!

If you could second shoot with any photographer (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

I’d just go and shoot with Kevin Mullins, who I know because I like his photography, he’s really interesting to chat to, I know that we’d have a great time shooting together and could finish off the day with a few beers.

How has the photography world changed since you turned pro?

The tech nowadays is incredible. The shift to digital photography has led to interesting developments, specially when we look at mirrorless cameras. I love my Olympus and Sony kit!

What one piece of software besides Zenfolio do you consider to be vital in your workflow?

ShootZilla. It helps me ensure that all of my clients receive the same, consistent, hit quality customer service.
