Camera settings explained: A photographer’s guide to ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.

If your photos keep coming out too dark, too bright, or slightly blurry, the problem is usually not your camera. It is the handful of settings doing the heavy lifting behind every shot. Once you understand how ISO, aperture, and shutter speed work together, you stop guessing and start making deliberate choices. This guide explains each setting in plain language, shows you how they balance one another through the exposure triangle, and gives you a quick-reference cheat sheet you can keep on your phone.

No pointless jargon tossed out just to sound professional. Instead, we’re focusing on the controls that can make your work better and how to use them.

What the exposure triangle actually is.

Every photograph is built from light. Your camera captures that light through three connected controls, and photographers call this relationship the exposure triangle:

  • Aperture controls how wide the lens opening is, which affects brightness and depth of field.
  • Shutter speed controls how long the sensor is exposed to light, which affects brightness and motion.
  • ISO controls how sensitive the sensor is to light, which affects brightness and image noise.

The word “triangle” is key. Change one setting and you almost always have to adjust another to keep the same overall brightness, or exposure. Open the aperture to brighten an image and you may need a faster shutter speed to avoid overexposing it. That trade-off is the entire game.

The reason this is worth learning instead of leaving everything on Auto is control. Auto mode aims for an “average” exposure and has no idea whether you want a blurred waterfall or a frozen hummingbird. Understanding stops: the common language.

Before the three settings, one shared unit ties them together: the stop. A stop is simply a doubling or halving of light.

  • Going up one stop doubles the light.
  • Going down one stop halves it.

This works across all three settings. If you let in one stop more light with your aperture, you can let in one stop less with your shutter speed and the exposure stays identical. Once stops click for you, the triangle stops feeling like math and starts feeling like a set of levers.

Aperture: controlling light and depth of field.

Aperture is the adjustable opening inside your lens, measured in f-stops such as f/1.8, f/4, or f/16. The counterintuitive part for beginners: smaller f-numbers mean larger openings.

  • Low f-number (f/1.8, f/2.8): wide opening, lots of light, shallow depth of field. The background goes soft and blurry. Ideal for portraits and isolating a subject.
  • High f-number (f/11, f/16): narrow opening, less light, deep depth of field. More of the scene stays sharp front to back. Ideal for landscapes (think Ansel Adams).

Depth of field is the most creative thing aperture does. Want that buttery blurred background? Open up. Want a crisp mountain range from foreground to horizon? Stop down. Shutter speed: controlling motion.

Shutter speed is how long your sensor is exposed to light, measured in seconds and fractions of a second: 1/1000, 1/250, 1/30, or several full seconds.

  • Fast shutter (1/1000, 1/2000): freezes motion. Use it for sports, wildlife, and kids.
  • Slow shutter (1/15, 1 second or longer): blurs motion. Use it for silky waterfalls, light trails, and night scenes. A tripod becomes essential here.

A practical rule for handheld shooting: keep your shutter speed at least as fast as the reciprocal of your focal length. ISO: controlling sensitivity.

ISO measures how sensitive your sensor is to light. Common values run from ISO 100 up to ISO 6400 and well beyond.

  • Low ISO (100 to 400): cleanest image quality, best in bright light.
  • High ISO (1600 and up): lets you shoot in the dark, but introduces noise, the grainy speckling you see in low-light photos.

The modern advice is simple: use the lowest ISO you can get away with, then raise it only when aperture and shutter speed cannot gather enough light on their own. Today’s sensors handle high ISO far better than cameras from a decade ago, so do not be afraid to push it when the alternative is a blurry or black photo. A clean, slightly noisy shot typically beats a sharp-looking blur every time. And if it comes to post processing adjustments, removing a minor amount of noise is often easier and will give better results than trying to make a blurry image sharp.

How the three work together.

Let’s walk through a real working scenario.

Say you are shooting a portrait outdoors and your camera meters a good exposure at f/4, 1/250s, ISO 200. You decide you want a softer background with more blur, so you open the aperture to f/2. That is two stops more light, so the image would now be overexposed by two stops.

To rebalance, you have a few options:

  • Speed up the shutter by two stops, from 1/250s to 1/1000s, or
  • Lower ISO by two stops, but you are already near base ISO, so the shutter may be the better lever here.
  • If your light is fairly constant, choose both. Lower your ISO one stop, and speed up the shutter by one stop. The beauty of the triangle is that there are always options.

Final settings: f/2, 1/1000s, ISO 200 (or f/2, 1/500s, ISO 100). Same brightness, blurrier background, sharper subject. That is the triangle in action. You changed the look without changing the exposure.

Camera shooting modes: where to start.

You do not have to control all three settings manually right away. Your mode dial offers stepping stones:

  • Auto: the camera decides everything. Fine for snapshots, limiting for everything else.
  • Program (P): the camera sets aperture and shutter, but you control ISO and a few other things.
  • Aperture Priority (A or Av): you set the aperture and ISO, the camera handles shutter speed. The favorite of most portrait and landscape shooters.
  • Shutter Priority (S or Tv): you set the shutter speed and ISO, the camera handles aperture. Great for sports and action.
  • Manual (M): you control everything. Full creative control, slower in fast-changing light.

Some photographers choose to stick with Aperture Priority because depth of field is usually their biggest creative decision. Start there, then graduate to Manual as the trade-offs become second nature.

Frequently asked questions:

What is the most important camera setting? None of them in isolation. The exposure triangle works as a system. That said, aperture is usually the first creative decision because it controls depth of field.
