Our office technological guru, and star of the Zen video tutorials, gives us insight to the digital image aspect ratio that best fits a photo print.

Photo print sizes and the digital image – by Jae Le

The standard size of a consumer printed photograph is 4 x 6 inches. This aspect ratio can be written out as 1.5:1 or 3:2.

With digital cameras today it is hard to tell what aspect ratio matches the pixel size of the captured image. An easy way to determine the aspect ratio of your digital photograph is by using this calculation:

Longest side / shortest side = x:1

So for example a 1200 x 1500 pixel image would be:

1500 / 1200 = 1.25:1

Images with the aspect ratio of 1.25:1 or equivalent ratio of 5:4 are generally printed at these sizes: 4” x 5” or 8” x 10” or 16” x 20”

Below is a list of aspect ratios to available Mpix print sizes:

Use this list to decide the aspect ratio to capture your image, or how to crop an image before uploading to Zenfolio.

Remember that when making a Price List, you have the option under “Customize Presentation” to show products that best fit the photo’s aspect ratio in their own separate category.
